SUMMARIZER WEEK 5 | Group 5

This week, Jeff, the discussion director asked our group about what happens in chapter 11-13 which help our group members understand these chapters more. Jeff’s questions are:

  1. What is a transmission? and how do they work?
  2. Do you think Jonas should or shouldn’t have been selected to be a Receiver? and why so?
  3. What was the Capacity to See Beyond that has happened to Jonas? and how it differs from The Giver’s?
  4. What is Gabriel admission toy? and what do you think it may symbolize?
  5. Who(se) got the permission to access the forbidden books of the community?

Only Nghi, Allie and me did reply all the answers of the questions.

This week connector is Naomi, she provided the connections of herself to these chapters. Naomi found similar when she found some interests when learnt her first cook by her dad and Jonas found something new and amazing from the Giver. And her similar book to  the Giver is Fairy Tail, because she thought  the protagonists can change the world and different than anyone else.

Nghi is our visualizer this week, she created a picture of Fiona’s red hair in Jonas vision when she walked through the door. Nghi told that is shown the reader how Jonas had changed, he could she the color red clearer than before.

The Word Wizard, Allie defined so many new words like pinpricks, annex, conveyance, torrent, etc. We learnt a lot from Allie’s words, they helps us to understand more about these chapters.

Our group’s reflector, Sammy hasn’t posted his role on edublogs, so I can’t put it into my summary.

DISSCUSION DIRECTOR WEEK 4 | Group 5

1. Did Jonas get an Assignment in the Ceremony? And what job did he have responsibility for?

2. What made Jonas was selected in the Ceremony of Twelve?

3. Why do you think the Chief Elder use the phrase Capacity to see beyond in the Ceremony of Twelve?

4. Imagine, what if you were selected like Jonas, what would you feel?

5. What made Jonas’s mother said the Receiver is NOT a job?

WEEK 3 REFLECTOR | Group 5

  1. After reading chapter 5 to 7, it was finally the Ceremony of Twelve, I predict that Jonas would face more lots of challenges in the future. There is a hint that the Chief Older skipped Jonas’s turn in the Ceremony (p.57)  which made me think that Jonas or his family had done “illegal” thing that the committee found out. In addition, like when Jonas wouldn’t receive his Assignments in the right turn, which might cause him receive the Assignment that he dislike. Before announced the Assignments, Jonas seemed worried on in the Ceremony especially in the giving Assignment part. He listened really careful (p.56).  Bad consequences might come and “find” him,  Jonas would be “chastised” by the the committee and they would send him to The Giver. Because of Jonas’s curiosity, he would know and realize all the truth of his community from The Giver.
  2. The mood in these three sections are ordinary and habitual, but there was a small conflict at the end of chapter 7. Similar as three previous chapters, there was no conflict occurred except for the skipping turn of Jonas in the Ceremony by Chief Older. That moment seemed awkward to Jonas because the Chief Older didn’t even mind to his turn.
  3. While reading chapter 7, I was wondering about why Jonas got skipped by the Chief Older in the Ceremony of Twelve, what he had done with the community? I wondered about that detail.
  4. In my opinion, the character has changed the most was Jonas, the main protagonist. He was mature through time, the moment he gained a job in next few chapter, Jonas would be more independent and work on his job by himself.
  5. The “big ideas” that seemed crucial to this text is the detail when Jonas got skipped his turn in the Ceremony of Twelve.
  6. My feelings was mixed up as the chapters go on. I felt normal when I first read chapter 5, then I got more interested when Jonas admit about his “stirrings” dream because I don’t really known what it means in this community. Until last two pages of chapter 7, it made me felt weird when Jonas was in the strange situation in the ceremony. And I was curious what would happen next.
  7. My conclusion based on these text is Jonas was going to receive a different job than everyone because the skipping may symbolized his “weird” Assignment.

WEEK 2 VISUALIZER | Group 5

http://www.fotobabble.com/m/MDF2RmZKWlEwTms9

a. This is my interpretation of the appearance of Gabriel which made Jonas felt like surprised and the “reason” why Lily wanted to be a birth-mother.

b. It is important section of the text because Gabriel is the one who “distracts” the protagonist, Jonas much. The challenge Jonas would face I think started from this baby, Gabriel. In my opinion, there were something hidden after the name Gabriel.

WEEK 1 CONNECTOR | Group 5

1. Previously, when I first went to school, on first grade, every night I have to share things that happened in school and my behaviors at school to my parents. They told me that they can help me if they know what I was struggling with. Just like Jonas, his community has a special ritual, everyone in a family must gathered every night to share their feelings. I found it’s kind of weird so when I grow up, even now, I’m still sharing feelings with my mom but not too often.

2. The similar movie that I’ve thought is the “Mickey Mouse Club”, everything seems perfect and peaceful. Same as Jonas world, no war, no pollution, all follow the strict rule that use to protect every citizens.

3. I think Maniac Magee is similar to Jonas character. Both of them know to “taking risk”, faced the challenges. They all enjoyed learning and experience new things. Jonas’ s training with the Giver is similar to Maniac Magee when he tried to pass the boundary of West or East side.

4. I found some similar writing style between Lois Lowry and J.K Rowling – Harry Potter’s author. Both seemed like to write about fiction, magic things, and adventures. Characters, Harry Potter and Jonas are also have some similar character traits.

5. I have just read the first chapter of The Giver so there is not a previous chapter to related to.

I am a little bit crazy, but I want to be funny.

I am funny girl, but I want to be intelligent.

I am a merry mood girl, but I’m not a good girl.

” The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” prediction

Based on the Snoopy and James Thurber’s background and all the topics that I’ve learnt, I predict that ” The secret life of Walter Mitty”  is going to be about a person who has a terrible conflict in his life which makes protagonist’s life is full of darkness. That horrible problem leads him to give up everything. Therefore, that guy starts daydreaming about everything he wants to have or he may wants to restart his boring, darkness life. Daydreaming to filling his void and forgets his unfortunate  life, like a snoopy cartoon.  He daydreams he will become rich, has lots of money for owning what he dreamed. The protagonist may dreams to be a successful person with a good position in society. His happy life will be full of friends, successful, especially loves. He needs loves of his families and friends to fill his sadness, to share his thought, to gossip for forgetting all “disaster” things which came to him. The main character would like to stop complaining about his life, there won’t be failure, just succeed and lucky things happen. The hypothesis about his most crucial dream is to be happy and laugh everyday even whatever happen…This is my prediction about “The secret life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber.
